Great Billboard Example
Solar Billboard from Juniper Park on Vimeo.
I came across this video sometime ago, I’m guessing it was around November of last year. I was struck by its innovative, outside-the-box presentation and pure message delivery. The “solar-powered” SunChips billboard provides an ideal example for innovative advertising as a larger idea – something I’ll be touching on from time to time in this blog.
For now, however, I want to focus more on the specific billboard, and a few things about it that I find the most interesting. If you haven’t watched the video showing the cool features of the billboard, check it out.
Pretty cool, huh? Not only does the billboard use a method guaranteed to catch people’s attention, but it is thematic in the truest sense of the word. Using the sun (literally) to demonstrate that Sun Chips are made using solar power is genius. An added bonus of the top-down letter format is that the billboard will look differently at different times of day. The company essentially benefits from a dynamic, changing billboard face without the use of electricity from a video screen, motorized elements, or otherwise. This subtly hammers home the point of energy-saving solar power. Effective advertising is very often simple and direct, and I can’t think of anything more direct than sunlight.
